Timely and selective handpicking is carried out in Kiriga. The cherries are delivered to the wet mill the same day they are picked. Cherry sorting is carried out at the wet mill prior to the pulping. Processing uses clean river water (wet process) and coffee is sun dried on raised tables before delivery to the dry mill before secondary processing.
The Kiriga Estate, owned by Brian Gakunga, was once owned by the British Colony but was sold to Mr. Gakunga’s grandfather. The 54 hectare estate has deep red volcanic soils rich in organic matter. They have their own dam which supplies them with water, which is sometimes visited by hippos!
