Nestled on the slopes of Bombe Mountain in Ethiopia's Sidama zone, the Durato village presents us with an exceptional natural-processed coffee that embodies both tradition and meticulous attention to detail. This light roast coffee is the product of 62 dedicated smallholder farmers who cultivate heirloom Ethiopian varieties at elevations reaching 2050-2150 meters above sea level, where the high altitude and unique microclimate create perfect conditions for developing complex flavor characteristics.
Behind this remarkable coffee stands Daye Bensa Coffee, established in 2006 by brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo. Their deep roots in Sidama's coffee community, combined with their operation of 16 washing stations and 4 dry mills, demonstrate their commitment to quality and community development. At their Kontama mill, each batch of coffee undergoes careful natural processing, with whole cherries sun-dried on raised beds for 10-15 days. This patient approach allows the fruit sugars to slowly infuse the beans, creating an intensely sweet and complex cup profile.
In the cup, this coffee reveals a vibrant symphony of flavors that dance across the palate. Bright notes of raspberry provide a sweet and jammy foundation, while tropical pineapple adds an exotic twist. The finish showcases the subtle complexity of Meyer lemon, offering a refined citrus brightness that ties the experience together.
